RAMS Roadmaps-Senior Resident

Depending on the length of your emergency medicine (EM) residency program, you will be applying to emergency medical services (EMS) fellowships at the start of your R3 or R4 year. In 2018, many EMS fellowships' application process moved to a National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match, however, some programs do still run an independent application process. Make sure to research the application process for each program to which you are interested in applying.

While specific dates vary, typical application dates and benchmarks are:

  • Mid-August: match opens.
  • Late summer through autumn: interview season.
  • Mid-September: ranking opens.
  • Early October: quota change deadline.
  • Mid-October: rank order list certification deadline.
  • Late October/Early November: match day.

Insider Advice

"More and more EMS and Fire agencies are seeing the value of having a fellowship-trained physician. It's important to get involved with pre-hospital care early in your medical school education and residency before applying to fellowship."
