First and foremost, get comfortable with being a new doctor! This is a big transition. When you begin to feel more confident in your day-to-day responsibilities and tasks, you can start to explore what types of opportunities your residency program has in the field of emergency medical services (EMS).

Some residency programs have optional tracks that expose residents to various emergency medicine (EM) subspecialties, allowing them to gain skills and knowledge to prepare them for future specialized employment or fellowship. See if your residency program has an EMS track to partake in.
