Roadmap to Emergency Medicine Research Funding

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Did You Know?
The Institutes that currently provide the largest amount of grant support for emergency care research include NHLBI, NINDS, NIDA, and NIA.
On average, it takes six to eight years to become an independent NIH-funded researcher. Most physicians begin with career development or training grants such as a K award.
- You can search the NIH RePORTER for projects that have previously been funded in your field of study to see if your work may be of interest to the NIH.
- Seek mentorship from investigators who have previously secured NIH funding when you are deciding to apply for a grant.
- Reach out to a Program Officer in your NIH Institute of interest and send along your Biosketch and Specific Aims so that they can provide early advice and guidance.
