President-Elect Candidate(s)

Jody A. Vogel, MD, MSc, MSW

President-Elect

Stanford University

It is an honor to be considered for SAEM President-Elect. It is an exciting and transformative time in our specialty with challenges and opportunities in our workforce, crowding within the healthcare system, ensuring a strong researcher pipeline, promoting provider well-being, and the evolution of our practice across acute care medicine. In this era, thoughtful and strategic leadership is necessary. As a long-standing leader in the Society, I have led multiple successful initiatives and would be honored to serve you as President-Elect engaging and supporting members while advancing the mission of the Society and our specialty.

I am Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. I completed residency training at the Denver Health Medical Center, and a research fellowship at the Denver Health Medical Center and University of Colorado Department of Emergency Medicine.

Over the course of my career, I have been an active contributor and leader within the Society. As a resident, I served as the Resident Member of the Board of Directors. As a faculty member, I have had the privilege of serving in many leadership roles, including my current service as Secretary-Treasurer on the Board of Directors and four years as Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors. Additional highlights of my contributions to the Society include eleven years of dedicated service on the SAEM Program Committee, including two years as SAEM Program Committee Chair, service as a member and leader within numerous committees, academies, and task forces, and leader of multiple national-level initiatives and strategic planning sessions to enhance emergency care education and research. I am also a member of the Academic Emergency Medicine Editorial Board. Through these excellent experiences and multiple leadership roles, I came to understand the essential role of the Society in advancing academic emergency medicine through education, innovation, and research. Moreover, I came to fully appreciate the benefits of the collaborative relationships developed through the Society which foster the exchange of knowledge and ideas that help improve patient care.

My goals for supporting members and advancing the Society and specialty are multifaceted. The first goal is to ensure high-quality education, networking, and faculty development for all members to help facilitate the leadership skills necessary to advance our specialty. The second goal is to increase research opportunities for investigators with the intent of increasing competitive, successful applications for federal research grants. I would advocate for expanded research training opportunities (R38, T32, K12), and actively engage as President-Elect with the National Institutes of Health and other federal funding agencies to increase funding for emergency care research. Third, I would continue to encourage active participation by junior faculty, residents, and students within the Society so they may benefit from the Society’s valuable resources as they become the future leaders in our specialty. Early mentorship through the Society is vital for the development of these future academicians who will carry forth the Society’s mission. Finally, I would work to continue to strengthen our relationships and engagement with other emergency medicine organizations as collegiality and collaboration is key to our specialty’s success.

The Society has played an integral role in my development as an academician, and as President-Elect, I would encourage and foster opportunities for this same development for others so they may also benefit from the Society’s rich resources. My overall goal would be to strengthen the role of the Society as an influential leader in providing and advocating for emergency care research, education, and grants. I fully appreciate the many outstanding opportunities afforded by the Society, and it would be an honor to serve you as President-Elect.

Secretary-Treasurer Candidate(s)

Ava E. Pierce, MD

Secretary-Treasurer

UT Southwestern Medical Center

Being a member of the SAEM Board of Directors has provided me the opportunity to contribute to strategic planning that will optimize the professional development of the academic emergency medicine community. It has truly been a privilege to be a member of this team that is working to ensure that SAEM provides opportunities that will be most impactful for its members. I would be honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve SAEM as Secretary-Treasurer.

I obtained my medical degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport and completed an emergency medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine. I am currently a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and work clinically at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems. I am the Associate Vice Chair of Outreach and Engagement for the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Director of the Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program, the Co-Director of the Joint Admission Medical Program at UT Southwestern, and previously served in medical student training as associate clerkship director. I completed the Medical Education Research Certificate Program, the AAMC s Healthcare Executive Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program, and AACEM’s Chair Development Program. My research interests include medical education, diversity and inclusion, health equity, and cardiac resuscitation.

I have two decades of work in EM enhancing the careers of colleagues at UTSW EM. Serving as a board member has given me the opportunity to serve members of SAEM across multiple platforms. I have been actively involved in multiple academies, committees, and interest groups at SAEM. I have been involved in the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) since it was founded. As an executive committee member and President of ADIEM, I collaborated with multiple academies, committees and interest groups including AWAEM, CDEM, AGEM, the Simulation Academy, RAMS, and the Social Emergency Medicine and Population Health Interest Group. I have been a member of SAEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, Membership Committee, Ethics Committee, Equity & Inclusion Committee, Wellness Committee, Faculty Development Committee, and Workforce Committee.

SAEM has contributed tremendously to my professional development and being on the SAEM board has afforded me the opportunity to help promote the development of other academic emergency medicine faculty, residents, and medical students through SAEM. My goal as Secretary-Treasurer would be to continue to work with SAEM to make innovative changes and creative solutions that advance the mission and vision of the society. If elected to serve as the SAEM Secretary-Treasurer, I will continue to work with SAEM as it contributes to the evolution of emergency medicine’s expanding scope and supports the optimal, future workforce within academic emergency and acute care medicine. I will be instrumental in helping SAEM implement programs that increase resources for emergency medicine educators, increase resources to support emergency care research, increase the pathway for academic EM physicians, and build a culture of inclusion which will ultimately improve the delivery of emergency care for all patients. I will work to increase the number of SAEM grants to help support the development and retention of junior faculty, help to design programs to increase opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty, and assist in the implementation of programs that promote personal and professional development and professional wellbeing. I am excited about the vision that SAEM has for academic medicine, and I would be honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the organization that has been so influential in my professional growth.

  • Nicholas M. Mohr, MD, MS

    Member-at-Large

University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine

Thank you for considering me for re-election to the SAEM Board of Directors. During my term on the Board, I have witnessed the impact of SAEM and our members shaping the future of academic emergency medicine, and our future is bright. I originally ran for election to the Board because of my deep appreciation for the role SAEM has played in my own mentorship and career development, and now is my opportunity to give back through service to the SAEM community.

I am a Professor of Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia Critical Care, and Epidemiology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the Vice Chair for Emergency Care Research. I completed residency training and was a Chief Resident at Indiana University, then I completed fellowship training in critical care medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. I am currently the Director of the Physician-Scientist Training Pathway in the University of Iowa Emergency Medicine Residency Program and the Director of the Emergency Medicine-Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship Program. My research is currently funded by NIH, AHRQ, CDC, and HRSA.

I have been active in SAEM for over 15 years, most recently as the Chair of the SAEM Grants Committee, Chair of the Abstracts Subcommittee of the SAEM Program Committee, and a Member-at-Large for the SAEM Board of Directors. I continue to be passionate about how SAEM can provide mentorship and professional development opportunities, and I am particularly interested in supporting programs to enhance a diverse workforce pipeline of emergency medicine researchers. Our Society is strong and healthy, and I am excited about our future nurturing the education, research, and professional development of academic emergency physicians. I would be honored to continuing serving the Society on the Board of Directors.

  • Bryn Mumma, MD, MAS

    Member-at-Large

    University of California, Davis

I am honored to be considered for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Board of Directors. SAEM has been an invaluable foundation for my career, providing mentorship, opportunities, and a community that have shaped my path in academic emergency medicine.

My academic journey began at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and continued through the University of Pittsburgh Affiliated Residency Program. I completed a Research Fellowship at UC Davis, where I earned an M.A.S. degree in Clinical Research and joined the faculty. My research in cardiovascular emergencies with a focus in sex and gender disparities has been funded by both the NIH and private foundations. I have co-authored clinical guidelines for SAEM Guidelines for Reasonable and Appropriate Care in Emergency Medicine (GRACE) and the American Heart Association. I am currently the Director of the Women in Medicine and Health Sciences program for the UC Davis School of Medicine, Physician Lead for the Emergency Medicine Data Curation Unit, and Chair of the Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Emergency Medicine Research Committee. This combination of leadership roles has given me the ability to develop a strategic vision, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and implement data-driven changes while promoting equity for faculty, trainees, and patients.

I have been an active SAEM member since I was a medical student, regularly attending the SAEM Annual Meeting and participating on committees and task forces. I recently completed terms as Chair of two important SAEM committees: the Bylaws Committee and the Grants Committee. On the Bylaws Committee, I updated the SAEM Bylaws with focus on inclusivity for all members of the EM community and implemented periodic review of the SAEM Bylaws, policies, and position statements. I also developed a deep understanding of SAEM’s governance and commitment required from Board members. As Chair of the Grants Committee, I not only coordinated the successful review of a record number of applications to the SAEM Foundation but also restructured our application materials to lay the foundation for expansion of our grants portfolio. As a prior member of SAEM Foundation Board of Trustees, I also understand the vital connection between SAEM and the SAEM Foundation, which together have been instrumental in in launching and advancing careers in emergency medicine research.

Serving on the Board of Directors would be a natural progression in my commitment to giving back to this organization. My goal is to use my own knowledge and experiences to uplift others, providing them with opportunities to grow and succeed. As Emergency Medicine faces a rapidly evolving landscape—marked by the recent workforce report, unprecedented clinical volumes and patient boarding, and pressures on academic funding, and integration of artificial intelligence technology—SAEM’s leadership is critical to shaping our specialty’s future and supporting its members. I will actively seek ideas and feedback from all members, ensuring that everyone contributes to shaping a shared vision for our future.

I am committed to helping SAEM foster a supportive community, engage the next generation of Emergency Medicine physicians, and drive research that will advance care for our patients. As a well-rounded academic emergency medicine physician, my experience in research, education, and faculty development will enable me to be a strong contributor to the SAEM Board of Directors and achieve all aspects of the SAEM strategic plan.

I would be honored to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of SAEM and appreciate your support.

  • Kelli O'Laughlin, MD, MPH

    Member-at-Large

    University of Washington

My name is Kelli O’Laughlin and I would like your vote for the SAEM Board of Directors Member-at-Large position. As academic emergency physicians, we pay a lot of attention to what is going on in the USA. This is of course important and appropriate. However, at this critical point in time, with rapidly warming climate, conflict and humanitarian crises, and gaps in essential health services globally, it is essential that we broaden our focus and look worldwide. We must consider how to best develop and support academic emergency medicine leaders around the world and how to best shape science, education, and the practice of emergency medicine and acute care globally. I am a physician scientist with an expertise in public health and research in humanitarian settings with more than 15 years of experience working in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. If elected as Member-at-Large of the SAEM Board of Directors, I will learn from other leaders within SAEM and broaden my own perspective to better understand the potential role of SAEM in global health. I will then use this knowledge to help guide SAEM to be more effective globally, with a focus on reaching underserved areas of our specialty worldwide. My goal is to expand SAEM’s reach so that we are developing and supporting academic leaders and shaping the future science, education and practice of emergency and acute care globally.

From 2020-2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I served as the President of the Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) of SAEM. While many GEMA members worked to support colleagues around the world as we all tried to optimize medical resources and care during the pandemic, within GEMA we became acutely aware of the lack of representation of our global colleagues within SAEM. Those of us based in the USA were supported by robust domestic institutions including SAEM. We were able to collaborate and share the resources needed during a time when many others were left with less opportunity to do so. Since that time, leaders within GEMA worked to ensure that access to the SAEM membership and annual conference for colleagues from low and middle-income countries were more affordable. We also began the Committee on Global Engagement to ensure we had focused attention on extending opportunities to our global emergency medicine colleagues. Additionally, GEMA leadership continued to partner with representatives from the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM) to provide scholarships for colleagues from low- and middle-income countries to attend the SAEM annual conference.

I believe my education, qualifications and experiences to date support my candidacy for this position. I am an Associate Professor at the University of Washington. I received a medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University, training in emergency medicine at UCLA (Ronald Reagan/Olive View), an MPH from the Harvard Chan School of Public Health, and I completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. I am board certified in emergency medicine and appointed to both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Global Health at the University of Washington. I work in the emergency departments at Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Montlake. I am a physician scientist with expertise in global public health. My recent research has included work to improve the health of refugees in sub-Saharan Africa, to monitor and evaluate the health impacts of COVID-19 in the USA, to promote COVID-19 vaccination among vulnerable populations accessing care in the emergency department, and to use a telephone surveillance system to collect COVID-19 symptom and exposure data and disseminate public health information in refugee settlements across Uganda. In addition to being a leader in GEMA, I have been an active member of the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM) and the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM). Thank you for considering voting for me for Member-at-Large of the SAEM Board of Directors.

  • James Paxton, MD, MBA

    Member-at-Large

    Wayne State University

I have been active within SAEM since 2008, serving on the SAEM Awards, By-Laws, Grants, Program, and Research Committees in a variety of roles. In 2024, I completed my terms as Chair of the SAEM Research Committee and Chair of the SAEM Bylaws Committee. The overarching theme of my work with SAEM has been to seek out novel ways to combine research and teaching. Within the Research Committee, I led the development of the inaugural Advanced Research Methodology, Evaluation and Design (ARMED) course, grew the Research Learning Series (RLS) from an abandoned concept into a monthly webinar series (which is still growing), prioritized the development of ARMED MedEd, led efforts to improve communication with federal funding agencies, formed initiatives to promote female and URiM EM researchers, and advocated for improved access to federal funding for acute care and medical education research. I am currently leading an SAEM Research Subcommittee charged with defining a national SAEM Research Training Curriculum, an ambitious but exciting project that I believe will ultimately yield a valuable resource for future generations of EM researchers.

My experience with the Bylaws Committee confirmed for me the importance of balancing respect for SAEM’s legacy and rich history as an organization representing academic EM physicians with the need to periodically review our mission as a modern organization. Since SAEM’s birth in 1989, we have grown and developed into a mature organization with different needs and priorities than our founders could have anticipated. Board members are charged with guiding the continued evolution of SAEM to ensure that our organization remains relevant in the modern world and continues to address the needs of our current members without losing sight of our mission to advance academic EM. If elected to the Board of Directors, I will continue to seek out novel ways to bring researchers and educators together. I will advocate for unity and collaboration within our organization, recognizing that each member of SAEM brings something valuable to our organization.

My educational background is fairly straightforward. I received my MD (2004) and MBA (2005) degrees from the University of Cincinnati, and completed EM residency at Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit, Michigan). Since completing residency, I have worked clinically in the EDs at Detroit Receiving Hospital (DRH) and Sinai-Grace Hospital (SGH). I am currently an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine and DRH Director of Clinical Research. I recently completed a five-year term as Chair of the WSU MP2 Institutional Review Board (IRB), and am an active clinical researcher. I believe that my experiences in business administration, regulatory policy, and research administration will make me a well-rounded and valuable member of the Board.

If elected, I will continue to advocate for those who don’t yet feel represented within our SAEM membership and the broader EM community. I am grateful for the opportunities that I have been given to serve SAEM, and feel that these experiences have helped me to develop the confidence and competency that I needed as a clinician, scholar, and leader. But not everyone has had the same opportunities that I have had. As a Board member, I would work towards improving that situation by helping to create new leadership opportunities for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds, including those currently under-represented within our organization’s leadership, and empowering them to lead in their own way. SAEM has many incredible, talented and valuable members who currently feel marginalized or excluded from realizing their true potential within SAEM. As a member of the Board, I would prioritize finding and engaging those members who want to contribute but have not yet been given the chance.

  • Stephen J. Wolf, MD

    Member-at-Large

    Denver Health Medical Center

My name is Stephen J. Wolf, MD, and it would be an honor to represent you as a Member-at-Large on the SAEM Board of Directors. I currently serve as Chair of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center, and Professor and Vice Chair for Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. I received my undergraduate education (1994) and Medical Degree (1998) from the University of Virginia before going on to complete my residency training at the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine (2002). I have been in my current position for the past 6+ years and I am significantly involved in both SAEM and its Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM). Currently, I have the honor of co-directing our SAEM Emerging Leaders Development Program (eLEAD) and leading the AACEM Leadership Development Working Group. As a Board member, I would bring my academic and leadership experience to the SAEM Board as an advocate for our members, aiming to develop and support academic leaders and shape the future of emergency medicine.

My background is one that prioritizes service and commitment to our patients, learners, providers, and specialty. I am passionate about developing and aligning effective individuals, teams, and communities, to multiply their impact and achieve outcomes. Each of my past and current roles have helped me to develop skills to this end. In addition to those mentioned above, I have served locally as a Program Director, Director of Education, Assistant then Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, and an appointed member on our hospital board’s finance and academic committees. Nationally, I have served emergency medicine broadly with a focus on education and faculty development, holding positions of steering committee member for a SAEM Western Regional Conference, ACEP state chapter president, chair of a regional Symposium on Emergency Medicine, chair of CORD’s Academy for Scholarship, and chair of ACEP’s Clinical Policy Committee. Additionally, I serve as an ABEM oral certification examiner and a member of ABEM’s Key Advanced Practice Committee.

As each of you know, SAEM is a remarkable community and society with profound a commitment to supporting and developing, not only our academic mission, but also our specialty as a whole. We are unique in the power of our academic voice, and we must use that voice to have influence and impact in the areas that matter most to our learners, faculty, and departments, particularly as they shape the future of Emergency Medicine. Our learners must feel drawn to an inclusive and vibrant specialty; our faculty must have wellness, safety, and developmental opportunities; and our departments must be equipped with the resources needed to address challenges and have significant impact both within our academic institutions and communities.

If elected, I would apply my passion and skills to continue the incredible work SAEM has been engaged in to date, with particular focus on strengthening our internal developmental opportunities and amplifying the external impact of the collective influence of academic emergency medicine.

Again, it would be an honor to serve you and our society in the role of Member-at-Large on the SAEM Board of Directors. I humbly ask for your support.

SAEM Bylaws Committee Member Candidate(s)

  • Joseph House, MD

    Bylaws Committee Member

    University of Michigan Medical School

Joseph House, MD attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. He completed residency at East Carolina University/Brody School of Medicine. During residency He realized he enjoyed education and Pediatrics and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at University of Michigan. After fellowship he joined the faculty at University of Michigan working in both the Adult and Children’s Emergency Department. Currently Dr. House is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics and has served as Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine for the last 12 years.

For the last 5 years, he has served as a member of the Executive Committee for Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine and is currently completing his Immediate Past President role in May 2025. During his tenure as Clerkship Director and on the CDEM EC, He has seen many changes in Emergency Medicine. He has been involved in revision to the Standardized Letter of Evaluation and currently is a member of the SAEM Workforce Committee looking into why there has been a decrease in applicants to Emergency Medicine. He has always prioritized the sharing of knowledge and for the last several years has presented at SAEM “Clerkship Director Bootcamp” sharing his experience and several other clerkship directors experiences and trying to improve medical student education. He has also been the Co-Director for the Medical Student Symposium trying to make students are ready to apply to Emergency Medicine.

Dr. House is interested in running for SAEM Board of Directors as he has seen the importance of SAEM as a member and as CDEM EC. He wants to see SAEM continue to support its members research interests with grants and mentorship. He would also like to continue seeing SAEM sponsor the Workforce Committee and encourage it to look at the next steps, ie how can SAEM work to improve the working environment of academic medical centers, how can we continue to show the value of an academic provider, and how can we help to train and interact with Advanced Practice Providers; we know there will continue to be more APPs working in academic EDs. SAEM has sponsored work looking into why the drop of applicants, but now needs to look into how to increase the number, quality, and diversity of applicants into the specialty.

  • Edgardo Ordonez, MD, MPH

    Bylaws Committee Member

    Baylor College of Medicine

I am humbled and honored to be considered as a candidate for the SAEM Bylaws Committee. As an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), where I serve as Director of Health Equity and Community Engagement in the Henry JN Taub Department of Emergency Medicine, I have developed a deep appreciation for the importance of organizational governance, transparency, and alignment with strategic goals.

My longstanding engagement with SAEM has demonstrated my commitment to the welfare and advancement of our organization. As a past President of the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM), I worked closely with SAEM leadership to champion mentorship programs, collaborative research and educational initiatives, and policies that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. These roles required a critical, detail-oriented approach and a deep understanding of SAEM’s mission and organizational values.

If selected as a Bylaws Committee Member, I will approach this role with a collaborative spirit, working closely with the SAEM Board of Directors, staff, and other committees to ensure that our bylaws, policies, and position statements align with SAEM’s goals and reflect our commitment to shaping the future of science, education, and practice of emergency medicine. As with everything I do, I will apply a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility to every aspect of the committee’s work.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am excited about the opportunity to continue my service to SAEM as part of the Bylaws Committee and contributing to the organization’s continued growth and success.

  • Christopher Thom, MD, RDMS

    Bylaws Committee Member

    University of Virginia

My educational background includes undergraduate and medical school studies at the University of Virginia, followed by emergency medicine residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. I then completed a one year clinical ultrasound fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University. Following this, I returned back to University of Virginia as a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine. I have served on the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound Executive Committee within SAEM since 2020. This includes a 2-year term as Treasurer, 2020-2022, followed by a one-year term as President-Elect (2022-2023), one year as President (2023-2024), and the current year as Immediate Past-President (2024-2025). Notable roles I have held at the University of Virginia include associate residency director (2019-2024), Director of Emergency Ultrasound (2019-current), Director of Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship (2019-current), departmental Diversity Facilitator (2017-2023), coding/billing liaison to the University Physicians Group (2021-current), School of Medicine Admissions member (2018-2021), and School of Medicine Curriculum Committee member (2021-current).

Contributing to SAEM through AEUS has been a highly instructive and rewarding component of my academic work. Over time, I’ve come to learn that our membership is quite often our greatest asset. When we have properly oriented ourselves to effectively harnessing members’ interests and talents, we have been able to develop quality content and programming for our Academy. It is with this sense that I hope to serve on the Bylaws Committee. Engaging with membership at all levels is critical for the health and vitality of SAEM and this extends to the Bylaws Committee as well. Previous webinars focusing on the Bylaws Committee have been a tangible example of demonstrating the scope of the committee to membership at large. My goal would be to find additional avenues for member communication and involvement within the scope of the Bylaws Committee’s work. This would include direct communication with SAEM members about our work, including entries in the SAEM Pulse. This would also include updating members on our efforts and our determinations as we work through the SAEM bylaws and make recommendations to the SAEM board. As bylaws can often seem nebulous to the outsider, it would be interesting to create a quick guide for members to easily get a sense of what the key bylaws are and how they support SAEM’s work. One could also envision occasional ‘bylaw highlight’ communications to members, wherein we seek to highlight a particular bylaw’s scope and importance.

In addition to the above, I certainly appreciate that the Bylaws Committee is one that requires a critical eye and close attention to detail. This is work to be undertaken in a serious and scrutinizing fashion, as the wording and content of the bylaws will undoubtedly have ongoing effects on SAEM’s missions and functions. My goal would be to provide clarity and visibility of the SAEM bylaws, particularly those that might be subject to introduction or amendment. All potential impacts of a bylaw addition or amendment should be thoroughly considered. Ensuring clarity of communication of these impacts to the Board of Directors and other relevant parties would be an ongoing focus of these efforts. Through this work, I would hope to assist the committee in working through each individual bylaw to assess its history, current status, relevance, and appropriateness into the future. The objective would be to not rest on the assumption that the current bylaws are the correct ones into the future, but rather to assess each one for current applicability and long term viability.

SAEM Nominating Committee Member Candidate(s)

  • Sara M. Hock, MD

    SAEM Nominating Committee Member

    Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Hock is seeking to build the team of leaders that will serve our SAEM membership through opportunities, collaborations and career advancement. As part of the nominating committee, she hopes to help select qualified candidates to lead our academic organization to continue as the preeminent organization for academic emergency physicians. Dr. Hock recognizes the incredible strength that a national network of collaborators and mentors can offer to junior faculty and trainees, and hopes to continue her work that began as a leader in the Simulation Academy by serving the broader SAEM community as part of the nominating committee.

Dr. Hock's previous experience with SAEM includes service as a member of the Simulation Academy board. Dr. Hock has served as a member at large, contributor to Education Subcommittee, Treasurer for two one-year terms, and subsequently served as the president-elect, president (2023-2024), and past president (2024-2025) of SAEM Simulation Academy. Her initiatives during that time included a continued development of virtual mentoring opportunities for members, in person mixer events at various national conferences, and advocating to encourage residency leaders to incorporate high quality simulation into resident didactic experiences through recruitment of fellowship trained faculty. Dr. Hock has also presented as faculty at SAEM and the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare, in workshops and didactics focusing on simulation facilitation, debriefing, faculty continuing education and diversity, equity and inclusion in simulation.

    SAEM Nominating Committee Member

Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Northwell Health

I believe that SAEM is the most important and formative organization for Emergency Medicine. I have been an active member of SAEM since residency, and am currently the Chair of the SAEM Faculty Development Committee, and an active member of the Equity and Inclusion, and Research Committees, and was elected in the past to be a member of the Nominating Committee. I was also selected previously to take part in the AACEM Chair Development Program.

In my prior term on the Nominating Committee, and my current application, I recognize the great importance and responsibility this position holds in identifying and vetting future leaders for SAEM.

I am currently the Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and a Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Most recently, I became the Central Region Medical Director of Diversity and Health Equity for Northwell Health under Northwell's Center for Equity of Care.

I have many years of experience in academics and have served in the past as the Associate Chair of Academics and Research in Emergency Medicine. I have been a member of the Appointments and Promotions Committee for the Zucker School of Medicine, and have been chosen to take part in multiple Chair and Vice Chair search committees. I have been a recipient of Northwell's President’s Award for Teamwork in 2014., the Emergency Medicine Service Line Guttenberg Award in 2017 for my work in Emergency Medicine, and was one of five finalists for Northwell Health System's Truly Leadership award, and was awarded the Truly Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award in 2024. I have a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Population Health, developing and implementing programs for vulnerable and underrepresented patient populations, faculty development, and mentorship.

I received a Bachelor of Science from Brown University, and a Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Rochester. I completed my Residency in Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital Center, and stayed on as faculty until 2013. I received a Masters in Public Administration from The NYU Wagner School of Public Service.

I would be honored to serve in this role, would use my prior experience in SAEM as a Nominating Committee Member, and my years of academic experience to assist in supporting the efforts of SAEM.
