Program Officer Event

The SAEM Annual Meeting will host the Fourth Annual Program Officer Event.

The federal grant application process has become increasingly competitive over the past several years and emergency medicine is an underrepresented specialty in federal research funding. Early preparation (often many months if not a year before deadline) and an understanding of the administrative and procedural steps of applying for federal funding is critical to the success of early investigators.

Program officers serve as key players in the funding ecosystem, serving a role as facilitator as well as administrative mentor (e.g. helping to demystify much of the grant process and suggesting practical things such as which institute would be appropriate for a grant).

The Program Officer Event facilitates interaction and networking between selected attendees and program officers (POs) from major federal funding agencies. Attendees must apply and be selected to attend this event.

Applications

Attendees will be selected through a competitive application process. Priority will be given to applicants who have unique research ideas and a demonstrated record of academic accomplishments.

Individual Meetings

Each attendee will be scheduled for four one-on-one meetings with the POs of their choice. Questions for POs to consider for these meetings might include:

  • How do I choose the right institute for my proposal?
  • How might I improve my investigator score?
  • How do you recommend I approach and interact with a PO?

*If you are selected to attend the SAEM25 Program Officer Event, you are required to either have a full conference registration or a one-day Wednesday conference registration.
