Work SMARTer, Not Harder: Utilizing the SMART Framework to Establish On-shift Goals (Education Committee Sponsored)

You’re ready to start your shift on a positive note and ask your learner two questions: 1) What do they want to work on today? 2) Do they have any goals for the shift? Your learner enthusiastically states they “want to see more critical patients!” You wonder if this is really a good goal and how will you measure this to give post-shift feedback? In the Emergency Department, we encounter an array of learners from various specialties, at different levels of training. It can be challenging to provide meaningful feedback without first understanding the on-shift goals of your learners. Establishing goals with learners at the start of shift empowers the learner to direct the educators focus and prioritize specific areas for growth. Goals also allow for tailored instructor assessment and feedback leading to improved learner engagement and ultimately better instructor evaluations. Our interactive lecture will focus on understanding and applying the SMART framework to develop meaningful on-shift goals.
