Social Emergency Medicine Integrated Network for Advancing Research (SEMINAR)

SAEM's Social Emergency Medicine & Population Health Interest Group is excited to announce the launch of a new research network, focused on health-related social needs in the emergency department (ED).

Emergency Medicine (EM) has always been a socially conscious specialty, recognizing the unique role the ED plays in America's healthcare system. The formal study of "social EM" has come more recently, including the flagship 2017 conference on "Inventing Social Emergency," the 2019 Annals of Emergency Medicine supplement of the same name, as well as the 2021 SAEM Consensus Conference on Social EM and the 2023 WestJEM issue on Social EM. Interest in social needs screenings and interventions in the ED continues to grow as do valuable conversations related to identifying effective, sustainable, and equitable practices. Accordingly, research in this space has grown significantly in recent years and must continue to do so.

SEMINAR aims to continue that progression. The SEMINAR team believes now is the time to build a network capable of taking concepts which show promise at one site and putting them to the test at a larger scale. By sharing findings and collaborating across institutions, SEMINAR aims to accelerate the identification of novel strategies, attract funding for multisite trials, and lay the groundwork for future evidence-based guidelines.

Vision

Evidence based practices guide sustainable social emergency medicine screenings and practices, which meaningfully improve the health of our patients.

Mission

To serve as a nexus for exploring what works in Social EM and offer a platform to establish or expand trials to multiple sites.

Join Us in Shaping the Future of Social EM

SEMINAR aims to convene quarterly in "shop talk" sessions to discuss projects, potential projects, and seek opportunities to collaborate. Discussion is already underway on several potential projects related to Social EM data practices and screening methods for unmet social needs. Fill out this form to join our SEMINAR network team!
