Elizabeth Lea Walters, MD, Loma Linda University School of Medicine

What you’ll learn from Dr. Walters:
  1. Was being in academia, a department Chair, or in department leadership always in the cards for you or was this more of an organic evolution of your career?
  2.  Can you discuss how previous leadership roles you’ve held have prepared you for your role as Interim Chair? How is the role of Chair different from previous roles?
  3. You began your tenure as Interim Chair less than a year prior to Covid changing the landscape dramatically; how do the first few months of the pandemic compare to more recently and what have been the biggest take-aways for you? What advice would you provide our listeners who may start new leadership roles in times of crisis?
  4. Your research areas have included emergency departments’ response to terrorism events, post-cardiac arrest care bundle feasibility, and the use of pro-BNP cutoffs for HF diagnosis in the ED. How did your interest in these areas develop? What is the best advice you received or that you would want residents interested in a research career to know?
  5. What advice do you have for future generations of physicians in Emergency Medicine, who are looking to juggle research or academic pursuits, clinical careers, student education/mentorship, and overall wellness?
  6. Any last bits of advice for students, residents, and/or young faculty?
