You Are Not Alone: How to Ask for Help as an Attending (Education and Faculty Development Committee Sponsored)
It can be challenging to balance clinical independence, academic productivity, and life outside of work as academic faculty. Physicians are less likely to ask for help, yet face increasing rates of burnout, career dissatisfaction, and personal distress. However, conventional training does not equip physicians with the tools to ask for help when it is most needed. Through interactive case-based discussions, participants will be guided through a series of three commonly-faced domains of discomfort: academic overload, clinical ambiguity while precepting junior learners, and seeking mental health care. This session will offer strategies to mitigate these commonly encountered yet rarely addressed stressors. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to analyze common stressors, evaluate management strategies, and enact a plan to seek help when needed. They will leave empowered to advocate for themselves and their colleagues.
