LGBTQIA+ Belonging in a Time of Division (ADIEM Sponsored)

Obtaining and supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion that reflects our multifaceted society is desirable in emergency medicine since we care for all patients. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQIA+) patients face unique challenges and barriers, at a time where stark division in society has led to attempts at exclusion, including from medical treatment. Census data suggest 12% of Americans identify as something other than heterosexual, many who report homophobia and even overt discrimination due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. In order to facilitate a sense of inclusion and belonging necessary for well-being, and to create trusting relationships, it is important that patients and colleagues feel belonging and welcome in order to optimize their health. Institutional and legal factors can adversely impact the LGBTQIA+ community, and can significantly affect all aspects of their wellness and health. All EM physicians, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should become competent in LGBTQIA+ healthcare, and comfortable in caring for LGBTQIA+ patients. This interactive session will advance the knowledge of experiences and barriers faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and suggest methods and skills to create environments of inclusion and belonging for LGBTQIA+ patients and colleagues.
