DEI Resident Education/Innovation Award

SAEM Residents and Medical Students (RAMS) is committed to promoting the next generation of diverse emergency medicine physicians. With the rising costs of medical education, RAMS seeks to provide financial assistance to under-represented residents demonstrating leadership skills and innovation in emergency medicine.

The nomination period for 2025 SAEM Awards is October 1 to December 9, 2024.

Please note that the SAEM Awards Committee has developed a standardized letter template for you to use when creating your nomination packet.


Eligibility

Applicant must:

  • Identify as an Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) resident (PGY1 - PGY4)—Per the AAMC definition “URiM means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.”
  • Be in an accredited Emergency Medicine residency program in the USA
  • Be an SAEM member

Financial Award

Awardees will each receive up to $1000 to assist in costs associated with national conference attendance or medical education costs (eg. national licensing exam fees, question banks, study preparation resources).

Guidelines

Demonstrate an excellence and commitment to emergency medicine:

  • A brief (1 - 2 paragraph) biographical summary
  • Personal Statement: 500-1000 word essay describing the resident's dedication, leadership, and innovative work in academic emergency medicine; include how you will use the $1000 and the impact you wish to have as an academic emergency physician. Please include a brief written paragraph describing financial need. (Please download the standardized letter template to submit your personal statement)
  • CV demonstrating:
    • Strong leadership and commitment to Emergency Medicine (ex: residency leadership, medical student education, previous involvement with SAEM, etc.)
    • Strong background of work in EM research, education, and/or innovative projects
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty mentor, residency program director, or department chair is requested (these may use the standardized letter template or be written free-form, limited to 2 pages) and up to one additional letter of support.
