SAEM Statement on Diversity and Inclusion
SAEM, as the preeminent academic organization in Emergency Medicine, has a core value to promote and cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for patients, providers, and learners. Emergency Medicine is the safety net for society’s health needs. Therefore, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to address inequities and health disparities, and to be leaders in addressing these issues through clinical service, research, education, and advocacy. Central to training and developing the next generation of emergency physicians is cultural humility, education, professionalism, and sensitivity towards all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, beliefs, socioeconomic status, veteran, immigrant, or other marginalized communities. We strive to value and understand those who are different from ourselves, their unique histories, and to be an advocate and ally for our patients, our learners, and our colleagues. The rich tapestry of humanity will sustain and strengthen us as an organization.
