An Advanced EM Workshop is an intensive educational program that focuses on particular techniques, skills, and practical aspects of the field. SAEM25 Workshops feature in-depth overviews or cutting-edge research related to academic emergency medicine in such categories as clinical innovations, teaching, gender and bias, and research.

World Health Organization Basic Emergency Care Training of Trainers Course

May 13, 2025 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM


In response to the need for emergency care education in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the World Health Organization Basic Emergency Care Training of Trainers course was developed by the WHO in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Participants will learn how to teach this course to frontline health care providers in LMICs through case scenarios in small groups, lectures, hands-on practice at skills stations, and interactive large group discussions.

SAEM Grant Writing Workshop

This interactive workshop includes didactic presentations and small group activities. Strongly recommended pre-reading and homework components will help participants maximize their learning experience and receive real-time feedback to improve their draft grant proposals. Be the Best Teacher: Clinical Teaching Educational Bootcamp

Excellence in clinical teaching is essential for emergency medicine faculty; however, many have not received formal training in this area. This workshop is designed as a "medical educators' boot camp" focused on clinical teaching. It will cover specific clinical teaching techniques, allowing educators to learn the fundamentals through facilitated discussions, application, and practice. A short, intensive, and easily accessible course on key topics in emergency medicine clinical teaching may provide a solution to this challenge.


Emergency Department Operations Workshop

Figuring Out the Fiberoptic

A diverse group of airway experts from across the country will lead a hands-on skills session focused on the essential skill of fiberendoscopic use, including intubation. Reaffirming Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Medical Education: Cultivating Community, Sparking Change, and Driving Progress

Empowering Women in Emergency Medicine Leadership

This workshop will begin with a discussion on women's unique career paths in emergency medicine, followed by a personal timeline activity where participants will identify pivotal personal and professional moments and consider barriers to advancement. Small groups will then form based on skill needs: (1) clear communication; (2) leading in high-pressure situations and conflict resolution; (3) operations; and (4) negotiation and delegation. The groups will be solution-focused and moderated, with AI tools used strategically. Key lessons will be shared at the end.

Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blocks

Two Hour Workshops

Innovations in Trauma Resuscitation and Management

May 13, 2025 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM


This workshop will cover trauma topics relevant to emergency physicians. Lightning-style presentations will address current literature, research, and education related to video resuscitation monitoring and review, scripted resuscitation management, emerging hemorrhage control agents, and the current use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in trauma resuscitation. The workshop will also explore institutional opportunities in violence mitigation. A moderated panel discussion with audience questions will conclude the session.

The Health Equity Skills Simulation Workshop

Racism, in its internalized, interpersonal, and structural forms, disproportionately affects the health of communities of color and marginalized populations. This workshop is a small group session focused on training participants in cultural competencies related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Using a low-fidelity simulation that includes standardized patients and active feedback, participants will learn and practice advanced health equity communication skills to address microaggressions and racist behaviors in emergency medicine.


So You Want to Be a Better Peer Reviewer?

May 13, 2025 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM


The workshop will provide an overview of peer review and include an exercise to enhance basic critical appraisal skills while teaching how to conduct effective peer reviews. Participants will be divided into small groups to evaluate three medical research studies: one that is publishable, one that can be improved, and one that is clearly not publishable. The groups will identify specific areas for improvement to make each study suitable for publication. After completing the workshop, participants will be paired with faculty mentors to further develop their peer review skills.

Mastering the Art of Clinical Feedback: When to Debrief and When to Direct

This workshop is designed for emergency medicine physicians to develop advanced communication skills in providing feedback and using debriefing in clinical education, especially when teaching in fast-paced clinical environments. This session will equip participants with the tools to determine when direct feedback or debriefing is most appropriate and how to apply each effectively. Participants will practice the Ask-Tell-Ask and the advocacy-inquiry approach to understand learners’ decision-making frameworks and improve clinical reasoning, behavior, and decision-making processes.

Bridging Gaps in Understanding Older Adults to Improve Care

This presentation will discuss how gaps in understanding the older adult can negatively impact their care and contribute to health inequities in this population. Nursing and physician colleagues will present principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and ageism to reduce bias and promote optimal care for older adult patients.
