Education Project Grant

Expectations of the Award

The Education Project Grant is expected to:

1. Be novel, innovative, measurable and reproducible.

• Whenever possible and applicable, the project’s value should be compared to an existing “gold standard”. If no clear “gold standard” exists, the measurement of its value should be clinically or educationally relevant.

• Projects may have qualitative and/or quantitative research component(s).

2. Provide a product that can be used by educators within SAEM and the general emergency medicine community.

3. Be relevant and applicable to the practice of emergency medicine.

4. Address an educational aspect within emergency medicine.

5. Propose a project that is novel or addresses an existing knowledge gap. This may include new studies, extensions of existing work (e.g., validation), or replication studies. This mechanism is not intended to fund ongoing work (e.g., funds used to pay for applicant’s effort working on a mentor/colleague’s existing study).

• A study that builds upon an ongoing project in a novel and uniquely evaluable way could be appropriate.

Examples of suitable projects for the Education Project Grant include:

• Assessing competency at any level of medical education (Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education), including the Emergency Medicine Milestones of the American Board of Emergency Medicine
• Assessing cognitive processes, such as diagnostic reasoning
• Evaluating instructional methods or modes of delivery
• Evaluating outcomes of educational programs, including faculty development programs
• Studying the education workforce and career satisfaction
• Studying novel job description models for an education scholar
• Evaluating interprofessional educational programs
• Exploring use of technology for teaching knowledge, skills, or cognitive processes
• Studying educational formats best suited to specific types of emergency medicine knowledge acquisition
• Providing evidence for best practices in simulation training
• Using clinical data to measure performance
• Identifying bias in educational materials or assessments

1. Attend the SAEM Annual Meeting during the award year, preferably presenting an education or research-based topic from their research.
2. Submit a presentation or a research abstract to the SAEM Annual Meeting. As the selection of presentations and research abstracts is a competitive process, acceptance is not assured.
3. Publish a manuscript (first-authored by the awardee) arising from the project in a peer-reviewed journal within two years of completing the award.

Eligibility for the Award

An applicant for the Education Project Grant must:

1. Be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period.
2. Have an advanced/doctoral or terminal educational degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DSc or equivalent).
3. Hold a university appointment in a department or division of emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine at the start of the award period. The applicant may work as a clinician at an institution other than the host institution or the institution at which the project will be conducted.
4. Not have received an SAEMF Education Project Grant (formerly SAEMF Education Research Grant) or SAEMF Education Fellowship award previously.
5. Indicate intention for a long-term plan for a career in emergency medicine education research and conducting projects that may lead to grant-funded educational research.
