      “Missed Opportunities + New Strategies: Addressing Adverse SDoH in the ED"

       

      Dr. Samuels-Kalow is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS), an attending physician in emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and the Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at MGB. Her work focuses on developing interventions to reduce disparities in emergency care, and designing strategies to use the ED visit to address adverse social determinants of health. Current projects include work to examine the role of individual and hospital factors in quality and equity of care for children in general emergency departments and understanding how to best address unmet oral health and social needs in the ED.

      Dr. Arjun Venkatesh is the Chair of the Yale Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Venkatesh is also an Associate Professor, Chief of the Section of Administration in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale University, and Scientist at the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. He has been funded by the NIH, AHRQ, and the Emergency Medicine Foundation to study health system outcomes and efficiency, and he is supported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as co-Principal Investigator of the Emergency Quality Network (E-QUAL) and for the development of the Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings. He has received over $6 million in grant funding, published over 80 peer-reviewed papers, and is senior editor of The Evidence book series. He is a national leader within ACEP and SAEM and he serves on expert panels for the National Quality Forum (NQF), AHRQ, and CMS. His work is also funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Addiction Policy Forum to advance the quality and delivery of emergency and acute care for opioid use disorder.

      Cameron Gettel, MD, MHS, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, a Clinical Investigator at the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), and a Co-Director of the Yale Emergency Scholars Fellowship. Dr. Gettel's research aims to advance the understanding of emergency department care transitions in the growing geriatric population. Dr. Gettel has led work with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians respectively addressing fundamental emergency workforce topics and developing innovative models to improve quality measure reporting within the specialty. Dr. Gettel received a BS from Elizabethtown College and an MD from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. He completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Brown University followed by a health services research and policy fellowship in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Yale University.

      Dr. Holly Caretta-Weyer is associate residency program director and director of evaluation and assessment for the Stanford University emergency medicine residency program as well as EPA/CBME implementation lead at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Caretta-Weyer attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where she graduated Alpha Omega Alpha with honors in research. She stayed at Wisconsin for her emergency medicine residency, where she was also chief resident. Dr. Caretta-Weyer then completed her medical education scholarship fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University and earned her master's in health professions education at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She is a PhD candidate at Maastricht University studying residency selection in a competency-based system.

      Dr. Becker is an associate professor at the University of Florida. He is board-certified in emergency medicine (EM), critical care medicine, and emergency medical services. After obtaining his MD and PhD at the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany, Dr. Becker completed his residency in EM at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowships in critical care medicine and emergency medical services at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Florida, respectively. He is the executive director of EM for the University of Florida Health Critical Care Organization. In the department of EM, he serves as chief of the division of critical care medicine and director of the section of global health.

She has been recognized locally and nationally for her commitment to education.

      David Yang, MD, is a Research and EMS Fellow in the Yale Department of Emergency Medicine. He earned his BS in Biomedical Engineering and BSAS in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, MD from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, and his MHS from Yale University. He recently completed his emergency medicine residency at Yale Department of Emergency Medicine. Nationally, he has served on the Equity and Inclusion Committee with SAEM. At the local level, he works closely with the sexual assault forensics committee and as an Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience (ILCE) mentor. His current research focuses on addressing disparities of care in three domains: discrimination that healthcare workers face in the clinical setting, disparities in care for survivors of sexual assault, and prehospital disparities in care for behavioral emergencies.
