EM Global Health Fellowship

This is a one year fellowship designed to develop skills that will help advance the field of emergency medicine in resource- limited areas and lead fellows on a career path in global health. Individual program emphasis will be determined by the fellow's areas of interest and may include clinical care, capacity-building and teaching or research. Global Health fellows will work a limited number of clinical shifts and will spend the remainder of their time involved in ongoing education and practical global health experiences. Fellows will have the opportunity to enroll in the University of Wisconsin Global Health Institute Graduate Professional Capstone Certificate if they do not already hold an advanced degree (MPH). Field experiences are focused in Uganda and Guatemala, but may include other sites based on individual fellow interest.

Our fellowship is designed to be flexible to meet the individual interests and goals of our fellows. A large part of the global health fellowship experience is in participation in activities abroad. We have partnerships with two sites, but fellows with other connections or interests can discuss other sites and locations with the fellowship director. Time abroad will typically be spent as a mix of clinical and educational activities focused on capacity building. Fellows with a strong interest in research can also participate in ongoing research efforts or develop their own research project.

 Global Partners:

·      Mbale, Uganda: Mbale is located approximately six hours by road from Kampala in the eastern part of  Uganda. We partner with Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, a government run not-for-profit hospital, with a catchment population of 4.5 million people from 16 districts. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with the pediatric and adult team to improve care for patients with acute presentations. Previous fellows have been involved in designing and implementing a training program in point-of-care ultrasound and a needs assessment for patients with sickle cell anemia. Ongoing research includes evaluation of the acceptability of point of care ultrasound in district-level hospitals and evaluation of children with suspected pneumonia using ultrasound.

·      San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala:    San Lucas Toliman is located near Lake Atitlan approximately three hours from the capital city. Residents are primarily Maya and many speak Spanish only as a second language. In San Lucas, fellows will have the opportunity to treat patients in an acute care setting, work with local community health workers, and teach medical students. UW has been partnering with the town of San Lucas Toliman for over 20 years providing clinical care, education and research. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate as clinical instructors for UW medical students during short-term medical mission trips, but also to explore more in-depth partnerships.

Global Health Capstone Certificate:

·       The Global Health fellowship includes enrollment in the UW-Madison Capstone Certificate in Global Health. This is an 11-credit graduate-level program designed for professionals (typically those in health sciences) working in global health. The program is focused on a broad understanding of global health concepts including history of global health, current challenges, financing and governance and health system models. The certificate program also includes training in health statistics, infectious diseases and noncommunicable diseases with an overarching theme of One Health. The certificate emphasizes effective and ethical engagement with global partners with a capstone mentored field experience.

·       Coursework is online and largely asynchronous to allow flexibility while fellows work in country and abroad.

·       Fellows will design a community/public health Capstone field project which will build on coursework throughout the year and integrate with their ongoing global fellowship activities.

Clinical 

·       Fellows will work a limited number of clinical shifts primarily at Beloit Memorial Hospital and UW satellite affiliate East Madison Hospital. The fellow will work an average of 8 clinical shifts/month.
