The Department of Emergency Medicine at Prisma Health Richland is dedicated to improving access to care in areas of the world where many people still struggle for the most basic healthcare services. The purpose of this 2 year fellowship is to equip emergency medicine physicians interested in pursuing global health as a career with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully develop global health programming and conduct research in resource limited settings.
The Prisma Midlands Global Health Fellowship will provide fellows with formal training in public health, research methods, and tropical medicine in addition to ample time in the field for hands on experience. With faculty mentorship, fellows will have the opportunity to work with a variety of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international government health facilities to develop their own interests into a sustainable project. Fellows will work as attending physicians in the Prisma Health Richland Emergency Department supervising residents in addition to fieldwork and the pursuit of a Masters level degree in public health, global health policy, research, or infectious disease.

Fellowship Experience
The Prisma Midlands Global Health Fellowship will provide fellows with formal training in public health, research methods, and tropical medicine in addition to ample time in the field for hands on experience. With faculty mentorship, fellows will have the opportunity to work with a variety of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international government health facilities to develop their own interests into a sustainable project. Prisma Health partners with OneWorld Health to improve emergency care capacity in the Masindi region of Uganda. Fellows work with the EM department's global health subspecialty resident to coordinate an annual acute care training for first-line providers throughout the Masindi region. In addition, the fellow spends several weeks at Masindi Kitara Medical Center working with providers to improve clinical care of emergent patients.
The Prisma EM department also has partnerships in Tanzania, Belize, Malawi, and Madagascar where fellows can work and conduct research depending on their interests. Current and ongoing partnerships include emergency medicine specialty development in Blantyre, Malawi, ultrasound training and capacity building in Madagascar and health systems strengthening in Belize.
Fellows work 900 clinical hours each academic year in the Prisma Emergency Department. Hours will be split between Prisma's primary teaching site Richland (where fellows will be expected to supervise EM and rotating residents) and PH Baptist/Parkridge which are primarily a community experience. Fellows have primary responsibility for directing the department's Global Health Subspecialty track which accepts one 3rd year EM resident each year. Monthly didactic meetings are held with the fellows, global health faculty, and residents interested in global health and covers a robust, rotating curriculum. Fellows are also expected to lead an annual GH journal club for our residents and provide at least 2 additional hours of GH didactic training to our residents at their weekly conference. Our intention is to create a global health fellowship that provides fellows with the basic curriculum and experiences needed to become experts in the field while still allowing a large amount of flexibility for fellows to pursue the aspects of global health that most appeal to them.

- Master's degree by distance learning from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in Infectious Disease, Public Health, Epidemiology or Global Health Policy
- ICRC Humanitarian Emergencies in Large Populations Course
- Various options for Tropical Medicine Diploma if desired by the fellow - University of Glasgow DTM&H recommended
- Monthly didactic sessions covering a robust, rotating curriculum
International Field Components
- Partnership with OneWorld Health for program development and research collaboration with Masindi-Kitara Medical Center in Masindi, Uganda
- Opportunities to work with our partners at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital in Tanzania for EM development, nonprofit PIVOT in Ranomofana, Madagascar for ultrasound training and capacity builiding, health systems strenthening in Corozal, Belize, and EM specialty development in Blantyre, Malawi.

Clinical and Research Components
- 900 clinical hours as attending physician in the Prisma Health Emergency Department in both academic and community sites. Moonlighting opportunities available within the Prisma system available for extra pay at the board eligible or board certified rate.
- Fellows will gain experience with direct clinical supervision of residents in the Prisma ED, formal resident education, and mentorship.
- Fellow will complete one research project over the two years of publication quality. Collaboration and research mentorship with local colleagues at field sites highly encouraged.

Prisma Health partners with OneWorld Health to improve emergency care capacity in the Masindi region of Uganda. Previous projects have included development of a trauma registry, creating a layperson EMS system for motorcycle taxi (boda) drivers, and annual acute care training for first-line providers throughout the region.

Prisma Health Richland Department of Emergency Medicine has partnered with Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (MZRH) in Mbeya, Tanzania to strengthen emergency services. MZRH is a 477 bed government hospital and referral center. Prisma Richland residents, fellows, and faculty rotate in the emergency department throughout the year and focus on teaching pre-assigned emergency medicine topics to general practitioners working in the ED. Past initiatives have focused on emergency ultrasound training, disaster preparedness, and trauma capacity development.

Application Criteria
All applicants must have graduated from an ACGME accredited emergency medicine residency and be board-eligible or board-certified with the American Board of Emergency Medicine. In addition, the applicant must qualify for South Carolina Medical Licensure. Applicants should apply through the website or by emailing applications directly to the program director.
