University of Pennsylvania - Penn Global EM (PGEM) Fellowship
The Penn Global Emergency Medicine (PGEM) Fellowship is a two-year fellowship that will prepare fellows to be leaders in the field of Global Emergency Medicine. The fellowship provides time and support for the development of academic, administrative, and clinical skills primarily in emergency care systems development, but also seeks to provide comprehensive training in the field.
The goals of the PGEM Fellowship are to provide each fellow with:
1. Training in the creation of sustainable improvements in emergency medical care through educational and emergency care systems development; research; international health policy/global health ethics; and/or disaster response/humanitarian assistance.
2. A working knowledge of Global and Public Health as well as research methods by obtaining a graduate degree/advanced degree and by completing additional specialized training programs in Global Emergency Medicine (GEM).
3. Administrative skills to develop and lead international projects and the ability to apply for funding.
4. Comprehensive training in the field of Global EM, including, but not limited to, areas such as global health policy, ethics, and disaster response/humanitarian assistance.
5. Advancement and refinement of clinical skills within Penn Medicine and at international sites.
Recent international sites among Penn EM faculty and/or established sites at the Penn Center for Global Health (CGH) or Penn Injury Science Center (PISC) include: Pakistan, Ghana, Botswana, and Vietnam.

Fellowship Curriculum
1. GEM Training: Each fellow will participate in specific additional course work in GEM as offered by the Penn GCH as well as through select external opportunities and courses – both in-person and online. Fellows will become Scholars of the CGH and will be connected with relevant centers at Penn as well as mentors both within the institution and externally. Fellows are encouraged to participate in regular scheduled opportunities (i.e. Journal Club) throughout the institution and among local institutions in the Philadelphia area.
2. Projects: Each fellow will work abroad on GEM projects. Each fellow will be encouraged to participate in current opportunities, but also to take advantage of other opportunities, as well as to continue any current project(s). Travel time will be divided (generally up to three months at a time, with specific approval for longer time abroad) as permitted by the clinical and graduate class schedule and as determined by the Fellowship Director and the Department.
3. Graduate Education: Each fellow will obtain a Master of Public Health in the Global Health Track; other advanced degrees (i.e. Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology) may also be possible.
4. Research: Each fellow will complete at least one research project of sufficient quality for presentation/publication prior to completion of the fellowship.
5. Clinical Medicine: Each fellow will work as a member of the clinical faculty (Instructor) of Penn Medicine for approximately 800 clinical hours/year. Each fellow is encouraged to participate in all faculty and academic activities in the Department of Emergency Medicine, as available.
Information on the Master of Public Health Program can be found here. (Note: the application process is internal for fellows - you will not have to apply for SOPHAS).
