UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DAVIS
While many of our projects are focused on emergency medicine education around the world, fellows also have the opportunity to try out a variety of experiences and will graduate with a wide breadth of experiences in many aspects of GEM.
We prioritize 2 year fellows but offer 1 year fellowship experiences on a case-by-case basis. We feel strongly after doing this for many years that one year fellowship are extremely rushed and do not allow fellows the opportunity to explore their interests and dive into projects before they graduate. The goal of this fellowship is to provide a broad training experience to ensure that you will graduate as an expert in EM education in various settings and a breadth of global emergency medicine experience.
**NEW***
We now offer a unique opportunity for 2-year fellows to enroll in the Global Ultrasound Area of Distinction. This is optional but offers a unique certification and experience. Fellows who participate will work with the Department of Ultrasound within UCDEM and gain expertise in Ultrasound and education. GEM will complete all requirements that a typical US fellow would complete but will be given 2 years to do so. In addition, GEM fellows will get focused mentorship from our GEM faculty and spend additional time working on projects related to global US. Fellows will graduate with a formal qualification in US and Global Emergency Medicine.
Global Emergency Medicine General Structure:
In the first year of the program, fellows will participate in all of our core projects (Diploma in Emergency Medicine in Vietnam, POCUS teaching in The Gambia) and have the option to participate in 2-3 other projects depending on your time and interest. This year is very busy as we understand that fellows are also gaining experience in as an EM attending, working with residents and students, and often studying for their board exams while participating in a variety of conferences, MPH coursework, etc
During the second year, fellows have the opportunity to dive deeper into the projects their are most interested while staying involved with core projects. We strongly believe in tailoring this expeirence to fit each fellows unique needs and future career goals and work with each fellow to create a unique experience based on his/her/their interests.
Fellowship Experience
The UC Davis Health Department of Emergency Medicine offers a fellowship program in Global Emergency Medicine. This fellowship strives to prepare future leaders of international health and emergency medicine health systems. Fellows develop skills in cross-cultural collaboration, international public health, teaching in low-resource settings and improvement of emergency medicine health systems and delivery of care.
This flexible program is designed for Emergency Medicine Physicians seeking a career which focuses on providing emergency medical care and education within low-resource settings. In additional to their work abroad, fellows will gain clinical and educational experience at the University of California Davis Emergency Department, a level-1 adult and pediatric trauma care center servicing the diverse population in Northern California. This is a VERY high acuity combined academic and county hospital system which serves one of the most diverse counties in the United States. Fellows have the opportunity to work as attendings at UCDavis adult and pediatric emergency departments. They will also spend about 25% of their clinical time working at the Veteran's Hospital Emergency Department nearby which is staffed by UC Davis Faculty and Residents.
Fellows will also have the opportunity to work in multiple low-resource sites during the course of their fellowship under the guidance of multiple faculty members, while also pursuing an advanced degree.
While the two-year fellowship track is preferred, applicants may be considered for a one-year track on an individual basis. On a two-year track, fellows will have the opportunity to purse a distance Masters in Public Health through the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene but may choose an alternative advanced degree depending on their area of interest and future career goals.
We can strongly about wellness and believe that building the foundation of a long and rewarding career in Global Emergency Medicine starts in residency and fellowship. Sacramento is a great place to live and while we work hard on shift and within the fellowship, we believe in playing hard as well. As part of the UC Davis family, you will join a close knit community of healthcare professionals. The residency and fellowship programs host frequent outings, meet ups and social activities for those who are interested.
