QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY

The Queen’s University Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship is designed to prepare future leaders in academic global emergency medicine by providing training in emergency disaster response, humanitarian aid, international research and emergency medical systems.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship begins July 1stand lasts two years (one year option available for candidates who already have an MPH degree). The fellowship is tailored to a Fellow’s individual interests and the time will be divided between MPH coursework, fieldwork, international emergency medicine training courses and clinical work in the emergency department.

Masters of Public Health Degree

For Fellows who do not already have a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree, the Fellowship will include an MPH at Queen’s (or elsewhere as pre-arranged with the Program Director). Coursework for the degree will be taken throughout the two-year fellowship and will occur concurrently with clinical shifts, other academic courses and field experience abroad.

The curriculum will cover: 1) humanitarian/disaster response, 2) international study design/methodologies and 3) emergency medicine system development among others depending on the Fellow's interests and career goals.. Fellows are expected to participate in the bi-weekly global health research lab meetings and in other global health activities at Queen’s University (schedule permitting). The following are a list of conferences/training courses available to the Fellow: 

 

1.    Health Emergencies in Large Populations (H.E.L.P.) course

2.    Humanitarian Response Intensive course

3.    International Emergency Development Leadership Institute (IEDLI) course. 

4.    Missioncraft Leadership in Effective Disaster Relief course

5.    Diploma of Tropical Medicine at an accredited school such as the London School          of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicineor the Gorgas Course in Tropical Medicine

6.    Humanitarian U Disaster and Response eCertification 

7.    European Masters in Disaster Medicine 

8.    Queen’s University Public Health and Preventative Medicine


Clinical Medicine

Fellows will work as an attending physician (or senior resident) in the emergency department of Kingston General Hospital and at the Urgent Care Centre of Hotel Dieu Hospital. While working clinically, Fellows will supervise emergency medicine and off-service residents as well as medical students. 

 

Fellows are expected to work an average of eight clinical shifts per six-week scheduling block. Additional shifts may be picked up as timing permits when the Fellow is in Kingston and these will be remunerated at the departmental rate for clinical adjuncts.

 

Fellows are expected to teach one core rounds to the emergency medicine residents and to present one departmental grand rounds in each year of their fellowship.

 

Fellows are encouraged to attend departmental monthly journal clubs.

Global Health at Queen's University

Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Office of Global Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences and with ARCH - A Research Collaboration for Global Health Equity
