AAAEM Member Insider Program

The goal of the Member Insider Program (MIP) within AAAEM is to foster strong relationships between mentors and mentees and to promote a sense of belonging and engagement within AAAEM.  This is achieved by providing mentees with guidance, advice, feedback, and knowledge of the innerworkings of AAAEM.  

The success of the program depends on the commitment of both the mentor and mentee. Below are some general guidelines to help describe the mentor-mentee relationship. 


Mentor Roles, Responsibilities, and Benefits

The mentor’s role is to teach, guide and help shape the professional growth and learning of the mentee and to serve as a positive role model.

Mentor Responsibilities:
  • Attend new member reception at AAAEM retreat
  • Commit to attend 1 meeting every other month throughout the course of the year long program
  • Commit to being engaged and accessible to the mentee
  • Take responsibility for keeping in regular contact with mentee and actively participate in the relationship
  • Offer genuine feedback and encouragement
  • Serve as a positive role model and as a source of information
  • Help mentee set goals, develop contacts, and identify resources within AAAEM as needed
  • Listen and help mentee develop career goals
  • Show respect and display a commitment to diversity and inclusion

 

Benefits of Serving as a Mentor:
  • Expand your network and build relationships with other individuals in the academy
  • Serve as a learning opportunity
  • Give back to the profession
  • Gain insight and different perspectives from other members within the academy
  • Contribute to the professional development of a junior member of the academy


Mentee Roles, Responsibilities, and Benefits

The mentee’s role is to seek guidance on his/her professional development and to learn about the different committees within AAAEM.

Mentee Responsibilities:
  • Attend new member reception at AAAEM retreat
  • Commit to attend 1 meeting every month throughout the course of the year long program
  • Commit to the mentoring relationship until completion
  • Take responsibility for keeping in regular contact with mentor and actively participate in the relationship
  • Openly share and discuss career plan with mentor
  • Be receptive to feedback and coaching from the mentor
  • Communicate directly, honestly & openly, be curious, pose questions, share ideas
  • Listen and actively engage with mentoring process
  • Show respect and display a commitment to diversity and inclusion
Benefits of Being a Mentee:
  • Expand your network and build relationships with other individuals in the academy
  • Develop professional knowledge and skills
  • Assistance in defining career goals
  • Gain insight and different perspectives from other members within the academy
  • Obtain a better understanding of the organizational structure and culture of AAAEM
