Beyond flashing lights and sirens: Community paramedicine as health safety nets for older adults

Summary:
This invited editorial in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reviews recent advancements in community paramedicine—Emergency Medical Services outreach targeting community-dwelling older adults—and identifies four primary barriers to wider adoption. These issues are critical to the evolving field of geriatric emergency medicine, as we seek to extend accessible clinical and community services beyond the four walls of the emergency department and directly into the community to meet the acute care needs of older adults.

Bio:
Dr. Ulintz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, completed his residency at Indiana University School of Medicine, and pursued AHRQ T32 postdoctoral research training at The Ohio State University. His research focuses on the role of prehospital providers in improving public health outcomes through innovative care models, such as "community paramedicine" and "mobile integrated healthcare". With an emphasis on acute care for older adults and post-overdose harm reduction, his work explores how EMS can bridge gaps between health systems and underserved communities facing barriers to care access.
