Cultural competency is the ability of a person (or institution) to be aware of their own cultural identity and belief system while also being open to and able to learn from the cultural identity of others. Cultural competency ensures that all members of a community feel accepted to be who they are and it helps to bridge the gap between people who may come from very different backgrounds; whether that be race, religion, sexuality, gender, socioeconomic status, country of origin, etc. A culturally competent emergency physician will be able to provide the best possible care to any patient who walks through the door because they have a belief system and tools that allow them to recognize each individual as a unique and important person who has their own specific identity and system of values and beliefs. This recognition of identity and culture leads to respectful, equitable, individualized, and appropriate care.
