SAEM20 Cancellation and Next Steps
After thoughtful deliberation, the SAEM Board of Directors has decided to cancel SAEM20, which was to have taken place May 12–15 in Denver, Colorado.
This was a heart-wrenching decision, but ultimately not a difficult one. Protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our members and attendees who are on the front lines treating the most vulnerable in our society at its greatest time of need is, simply put, the right thing to do. We also have a professional responsibility to model social distancing and not contribute to the spread of the virus through a large public gathering. Additionally, many academic institutions have restricted travel, preventing many of our attendees and speakers from being able to attend SAEM20 and making us unable to provide the educational offerings you need and expect.
What is the registration refund process?
If you registered for SAEM20, you will receive a full refund. You do not need to contact the SAEM office to request a refund. Refunds will be processed to their original form of payment. Due to the sheer number of refunds, we ask that you be patient with us. All refunds will be processed by April 7, 2020. Please allow up to an additional 5-7 business days for your refund to appear on your statement.
What should I do if I made travel plans or reserved a hotel room?
We urge those who were planning to attend SAEM20, if you have not already done so, to expedite flight cancellations. Attendees who booked housing within the SAEM housing block do not need to do anything more; reservations will be cancelled automatically. Individuals who booked reservations on their own outside of the SAEM official housing block should cancel them immediately in whatever manner they were booked.
Can I still acknowledge my work for professional promotion?
For your resume or CV, those with accepted content to SAEM20 are still welcome to note your work was accepted for presentation at SAEM20.
Will SAEM20 content be available virtually or online?
Our team recognizes that an in-person meeting is optimal for fostering connections and collaborating with colleagues within the academic emergency medicine community. We also understand the disappointment of those who had hoped to present their research, educational innovations, and/or didactics. While we cannot replace or replicate these lost opportunities, the SAEM Program Committee is working hard to provide some SAEM20 educational content in a virtual and/or online format.
The following SAEM20 content will be held virtually during the week of May 12–15:
- Remarks from the outgoing and incoming SAEM presidents
- Keynote presentations and plenary abstract presentations
- A special session on COVID-19
- Grant Writing Workshop
The following events will be held virtually, tentatively in late spring to summer:
- Consensus Conference on Telehealth in EM
- Chief Resident Forum
- X-Waiver Training
Didactic, Abstract, ePoster, Innovation and IGNITE! Presentations
Accepted presenters will have the option of recording their sessions to be published/shared on SAEM platforms including the saem.org website, SAEM20 ePoster Gallery, SAEM YouTube channel, and/or SAEM's social media channels. Presenters will receive a direct email regarding this option by April 7, 2020.
SAEM20 abstracts will be published as planned, in Academic Emergency Medicine.
Advanced EM Workshop Day
Advanced EM Workshop Day is canceled. However submissions accepted for SAEM20 will automatically be submitted for consideration for SAEM21 in Atlanta.
Clinical images that were accepted for SAEM20 and have all release forms signed, will be shared on the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine (ALiEM) blog and on SAEM's social media platforms. Accepted submitters will also be invited to display their clinical images at the SAEM21 Clinical Images exhibit.
The following sessions and events are canceled for SAEM20 and postponed until SAEM21:
- Program Officer Event
- Meet, Greet, and Tweet
- Experiential Learning Events (Dodgeball, SonoGames, SimWars, MedWAR, Jeopardy, etc.)
- Social Events (RAMS Party, luncheons, dinners, etc.)
