Article Summary: The Geriatric ED Guidelines and Accreditation process list many process improvements needed to achieve accreditation, but they do not give guidance on how to incorporate these processes into the busy ED workflow.  This article is a group effort from experts in Geri EM from around the world to discuss how different centers have operationalized this process. The goal is to provide ED physicians, staff, and administrators with some examples and metrics to consider when designing their own Geriatric ED.  This paper aligns with my goals of making Geri ED care accessible to any patient. The more we can discover about ways to create sustainable, low cost system improvements the easier it will be to disseminate these improvements to EDs across the world.

Short Bio: Dr. Lauren Southerland is an Associate Professor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.  She did her Emergency Medicine residency at Duke University and then completed a Geriatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Beaumont Hospital.  Her funded research concerns the implementation of geriatric screening tools in the ED and the effects on patient’s functional status and quality of life. She is in the first year of a NIA funded K23 grant to study this.  She also is the former director of the OSU Geriatric ED and ED Observation Units, and has several papers on quality improvement in these areas. She is currently doing training in quality improvement via formal instruction in Implementation and Dissemination Science and will be starting her Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma.  She has an amazing supportive team at OSU and at home, where she enjoys baking crazy cakes for her 4 kids.
