Application Deadline: August 1, 2017
All application components, including letters of support, must be submitted electronically in a single file (PDF format only) attached to an email to email@example.com. The subject line of the email should indicate the grant for which the applicant is applying (Research Training Grant).
All applications must be received by 5 pm (Central time) on their due date. No additional material (e.g. updates, publications, corrections, etc.) will be accepted after the application deadline.
APPLICATION FORMApplicants must use the most current version of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PHS 398 forms which can be downloaded at: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html#forms. If there are questions regarding formatting, formatting which conforms to NIH guidelines will always be accepted.
The latest NIH biosketch format should be used.
Font type and size for the application should be Arial 11 point, including literature cited. Single line spacing is acceptable. Figures, charts, tables, and legends or captions may be in smaller size font but must be clear and legible.
Blank/plain paper can be used as needed in lieu of continuation pages when no form is specified to be used. The margins must be top: 0.8, bottom: 0.5, left: 0.5, right: 0.5.
PURPOSE OF THE AWARDThe SAEMF Research Training Grant is intended to provide funding to support the development of a scientist in emergency medicine. Its specific goals are:
Provide support to an emergency medicine academician awardee for two years of concentrated training and mentorship with an emphasis on learning research methodology. The award is intended to support the development of sound research skills rather than a specific research project.
Enhance the likelihood of the selection of an academic and research career by the awardee.
Facilitate the support of research training in the awardee’s host institution for emergency medicine research scientists.
Encourage the awardee’s academic development and involvement in emergency medicine research.
EXPECTATIONS OF THE RESEARCH TRAINING GRANT RECIPIENTThe Research Training Grant recipient is expected to:
Acquire sound research skills through the financial support of the grant.
Receive strong mentorship and engage in a rigorous training curriculum.
Complete a research project appropriate to the mentorship and training plan that will help develop the awardee’s research and academic career.
Receive the fundamental skills necessary to succeed as a research scientist and allow him/her to compete for subsequent extramural grant funding.
An applicant for the Research Training Grant must:
Be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period.
Have an advanced/doctoral or terminal educational degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, DSc or equivalent).
Hold a university appointment (e.g., faculty, fellow, or similar) in or be actively involved (e.g., have an adjunct appointment) with a department or division of emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine at the start of the Research Training Grant award period. Emergency medicine residents in their final year of residency may apply for the Research Training Grant, subject to the same stipulation of holding a university appointment at the start of the Research Training Grant award period. The applicant may work as a clinician at an institution other than the host institution or the institution at which the project will be conducted.
Not have received a SAEMF Research Training Grant previously, or a similar research training grant from another entity, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Emergency Medicine Foundation.
Greater consideration for receipt of the award will be given to applicants who:
Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to emergency medicine-focused research and a research career. This demonstrated commitment may include the number of years involved in research or emergency medicine-focused research; number and quality of research or emergency medicine-focused research publications and presentations; research presentations at scientific meetings; and local, regional, national and international activities focused on research or emergency medicine-focused research. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Greater consideration and potentially better scores will be given to applicants who provide evidence of this commitment. Greater involvement in topic areas applicable to the research, e.g., toxicology, will also be taken into consideration.
Demonstrate evidence of involvement in SAEM activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes number of years as a member of SAEM and participation in SAEM activities and functions (e.g., SAEM presentations and committee membership). Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to SAEM. Greater consideration and potentially better scores will be given to applicants who provide evidence of this commitment.
The Applicant's Host Institution
The applicant’s host institution must:
Provide adequate administrative and clerical support to the fellow, including, but not limited to, office space, administrative support, and information systems.
Demonstrate a track record of involvement and commitment to research training at local, state, and national levels. In the majority and ideal circumstances, the host institution should have an accredited emergency medicine residency program.
Demonstrate the availability of faculty, resident and /or medical student teaching opportunities for the fellow.
Provide opportunities for the fellow to work as an emergency medicine physician, but shall not require fellows to perform clinical duties in excess of 12 hours per week. The applicant may work as an emergency medicine physician at a location other than the host institution.
The applicant’s host department:
Must be a department or division (or equivalent) of emergency medicine (may be within or outside of the United States).
Should be actively involved in emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine research and education.
Should have an established research program as exemplified by: (a) faculty/staff with extra- and/or intramural competitive grant funding; (b) current Institutional Review Board- (IRB, or equivalent) approved clinical, health services, or laboratory research in progress; (c) faculty/staff who have presented their research at national or international meetings; (d) faculty/staff publications in peer-reviewed research journals; (e) a formal research curriculum; and (f) dedicated funds, space, and support personnel available to ensure completion of projects in which the applicant will participate.
Must limit non-research obligations by the applicant after receipt of the award to a maximum of 12 hours per week, including all administrative, clinical and teaching or other non-research activities. This limitation in non-research obligation hours must be certified to by the applicant, mentor, and department/division (or equivalent) chair.
The Training Site
The applicant’s primary training site:
Should be an academic department/division (or equivalent) of emergency medicine or pediatric emergency medicine.
Is expected to have access and facilities for training similar to those outlined in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for clinical research training (http://clinicalcenter.nih.gov/ccc/clinicalresearch/).
Is strongly encouraged to have an affiliation with institutions offering advanced degree programs (e.g., master’s or doctoral degree programs in biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, etc.) and/or training in research methodology.
The applicant’s mentor(s):
Should have experience mentoring current/former trainees who are developing/have productive careers as research scientists.
Should have expertise in the applicant’s proposed area of research.
Should have expertise in research methodology.
Must commit the necessary time to provide both specific and general research training to the mentee.
Must supervise the mentee’s research project.
Must provide the necessary equipment and resources to execute the mentee’s research project if these are not available from the mentee’s department/division or another source specified in the grant application.
THE FINANCIAL AWARDThe Research Training Grant will provide a total of up to $75,000 per year for two years, contingent on the availability of funds from the SAEMF. The SAEMF Research Training Grant funds only may be used for fellow salary. Fringe benefits are permissible in addition to salary, but the total of salary and fringe benefits may not exceed $75,000 per year for two years. No additional costs are supported by SAEMF; any other costs are the responsibility of the fellow’s host institution or another group specified in the application.
SAEMF grants are dependent upon the amount of available funds from the SAEMF. SAEMF may discontinue, postpone, or change grant funding based on the amount of funds available. The number and monetary amount of awards granted depend on the quality of applications and status of the SAEMF endowment funds.
Costs included in the Research Training Grant budget as provided by the SAEMF Research Training Grant should not exceed $75,000 per year. However, in addition to the funds from SAEMF, the budget justification should reflect all pending and active sources of funding relevant to the project. The submission of detailed budgets and budget justifications for the use of funds for the grant from SAEMF and additional funds available to support the goals of the award from all other sources are required as part of the application and again for award recipients during the reporting period of the award.
Failure to meet the award guidelines or inability of the awardee to complete the term of the award shall result in the need to return residual funds to the SAEMF.
Funds for the second training year will be made available to the host institution only after submission of a progress report that is judged by the SAEM Grants Committee to demonstrate satisfactory accomplishment of proposed goals in the first year of the grant period.
For projects requiring the host institution’s IRB or equivalent approval, funds will not be dispersed until IRB approval is obtained. Award extensions may be made at the discretion of the Grants Committee on a case-by-case basis.
DURATION OF THE AWARD
The award is for two years (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2019).
PROGRESS REPORTSA progress report is due at 12 months from the start of the grant period. The final project and financial report is due at the end of the grant period. The progress report template can be downloaded at Post Award. These reports will be prepared independently by the awardee and mentor and submitted to SAEMF.
The expectations of the awardee to deliver are as follows:
The awardee will attend the SAEM Annual Meeting during both years of the award, and the awardee’s department will provide financial support for meeting attendance.
The awardee is expected to submit an abstract reporting on research performed by the awardee during the training period for competitive review with potential for presentation at the SAEM Annual Meeting. If accepted for presentation, the awardee’s department will provide financial support for meeting attendance. Funds from the Research Training Grant may not be used to pay for attending the meeting and presenting research or other findings.
Publish a manuscript (first-authored by the awardee) in a peer-reviewed journal within two years of completing the Research Training Grant.
POLICIES GOVERNING THE USE OF HUMANS AND ANIMALS
If human or animal experimentation is to be performed during the period of the award, the department and institution to be used as the training site must affirm that: (1) investigations involving human subjects proposed and subsequently carried out in the application have been endorsed and approved by the IRB, or other clearly designated appropriate body, at the study site; (2) any research involving human subjects will conform ethically with the guidelines prescribed by the NIH; and (3) research involving animals will conform with the current "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals", NIH publication, of the Department of Health and Human Services/United States Public Health Service (DHHS/USPHS), and has been approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee at the study site.
INVESTIGATORY FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE POLICY/OBJECTIVITY IN RESEARCH
Applicants and institutions are required by SAEMF to comply with the USPHS regulations, Final Rule, 42 CFR Part 50, Subpart F: Responsibility of Applicants for Promoting Objectivity in Research. The applicant’s and mentor’s institution or host institution official’s signature on the signature page of the application indicates compliance that an institutional administrative process is in effect to identify and resolve conflicting financial interests of the type described in Subpart 50.604(a) with respect to all projects for which funding is sought from SAEMF.
PATENT, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER POLICY
All inventions discovered or arising out of research supported in whole or in part by SAEMF, which may be used in emergency medicine research, teaching, or practice, shall be reported within one (1) year to SAEMF. "Invention" is any discovery, material, method, process, product, program, software of use, whether or not patented or patentable or copyrighted or copyrightable, that has application of value such that its use, licensing, lease, or sale can generate revenue. If the institution receiving or disbursing SAEMF funds, which supported the invention has an established and applicable patent, intellectual property, or technology transfer policy and procedure for administering inventions, SAEMF will defer to that policy. If the institution has no established and applicable patent, intellectual property, or technology transfer policy and procedure for administering inventions, SAEMF shall have the right to determine the disposition of invention rights. In such cases, SAEMF may:
Decide that patent and copyright should be or not be filed;
Release the invention to the inventor(s) or inventor's designee;
Submit the invention to a qualified organization for administration and licensing;
Determine by negotiation the fair share of royalty income to be paid to the inventor(s);
License or make other arrangements for the application and use of the invention on an exclusive or non-exclusive, royalty, or royalty-free basis.
GRANT REVIEW PROCESS
The SAEM Grants Committee is responsible for reviewing grant applications for this award, and will make recommendations to the SAEMF Board of Trustees regarding candidate award recipients. The committee uses a scoring system to judge and compare applications that considers the qualifications of the applicant and mentor, the research proposal, the training proposal, and the host institution. The committee judges applications with the goal of choosing awardees with the highest likelihood of becoming highly productive research-oriented academic emergency physicians. A Research Training Grant will be awarded only if the committee and the SAEMF deems that an applicant worthy of receiving the award can be selected.
