Emergency physicians are uniquely equipped to provide improvised medical care, the hallmark of wilderness medicine (WM), and it has become a robust academic subspecialty. In the age of globalization, remote travel, increasing natural disasters, and frequent humanitarian response needs, the incidence of improvised medical care is growing. Thus, we have an obligation to instruct our trainees with the fundamentals of WM so they can effectively provide care outside of an emergency department.
